At St Joseph’s our art curriculum is designed to build upon prior learning, improve communication skills, promote creativity, broaden knowledge and prepare pupils for life beyond school. In art we use the Suffolk Scheme of work to make our art lessons fun and exciting. Within the art scheme of work, pupils will focus on a range of knowledge and skills within a particular unit. From Years 1-6 the following units are:

• Learning how to draw, paint, print and collage using a range of quality resources that we have in school.
• Reflecting on  our own work and the work of others.
• Visits to art galleries and exhibitions to promote a sense of awe and wonder and raise aspirations.
• Completing art lessons outdoors where possible.
• Displaying our work in the corridors and classrooms  to help celebrate pupils’ creativity and the application of key skills.
• Art competitions.
• Learn about significant artists from the past and present.
• Making cross-curricular links to engage interests and facilitate the understanding of wider themes.

Why do I need to know this? 

By teaching art and design, we aim to help pupils: 

• Develop their creativity and imaginative skills. 
• Use a wide range of tools and materials safely and effectively.  
• Learn how to draw, paint, sculpture and create art. 
• To be proud of their accomplishments.
• Evaluate their work and the work of their peers, as well as other artists. 

The teaching of art offers the knowledge and understanding needed to use specific techniques and encourages a passion for the subject.
