- Improve the quality and control of my performance.
- Recognise and describe how my body feels during exercise.
- Engage in competitive sports and activities.
- Ensure I lead an active and healthy life.
The exciting things that take place in PE are:
- After school clubs.
- After school competitions including football, cricket, orienteering.
- Exciting theme days.
Why do I need to know this?
A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. PE develops the children's knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. These include dance, games, gymnastics, swimming and water safety, athletics and outdoor adventure activities. PE promotes an understanding in children of their bodies in action. It involves thinking, selecting and applying skills, and it promotes positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle. Thus, we enable the children to make informed choices about physical activity throughout their lives.
Curriculum
In each year group, children take part in:
- Athletics;
- Gymnastics;
- Dance;
- Invasion Games.
In addition, all children in Year 4 learn to swim. When children have still not learnt to swim confidently by Year 6, additional small-group intensive lessons are funded to make sure that all children master this life-saving skill.
How can I help my child learn well in this subject?
Being as active as possible and trying many different sports at a young age is essential to doing well in this subject. Also, please ensure that on the days that children have PE that have a full PE kit in school.
Above all, a positive attitude to sports and PE goes a long way to ensuring excellent progress.
Sports Partnerships
St Joseph’s buys into the Rossendale Schools Sports Partnership each year, which means that our children experience a huge range of competitive sport against other schools. In addition, specialised coaches are frequently brought into school to do extra sessions beyond the PE requirements.
